Officials

Role of the Officials

A properly conducted athletics meet requires Officials to work together as an efficient coordinated team.
Their responsibility is to provide athletes with every chance of achieving their best performance in a fair
competition. The Athlete must be considered first.

Becoming an official is not only easy, but you may be performing the role of an official without even knowing it. Each Saturday we rely on the assistance of parents to record, measure and time the athletes. If this is you, then you are already performing in the role of an official. Why not take the next step, you do not need to know all the rules, but you will learn where to find the rules and how to apply them.

D Grade Official

Your first step in becoming an accredited LAQ Official is to obtain your D grade qualification. You are able to obtain your D grade accreditation at the centre, and this is the level at which most people feel comfortable. All that is required is to take home some reading material and then sit an open book examination at the centre when you are ready.

Accreditation and theory papers are set in event groups, Jumps, Throws, Track, Recording and Race Walking.    A typical exam  paper  includes a general  section,  as well as 15 to 20 questions on each specific event within the event group.  You will be encouraged to undertake the whole event group, particularly if you wish to gain a higher-grade accreditation.

I greatly urge all parents to consider obtaining their D level accreditation in at least one event group.

C Grade Official

Once you have your D grade qualification, you may want to consider obtaining a C grade qualification. To obtain accreditation as a C grade official you will need to sit another exam and also go through some practical assessments. The practical assessments are normally carried out at LAQ carnivals under the supervision of an experienced official. The exams are held at various locations throughout the season.
